Medicaid turned 50 this last week!
Medicaid is a health insurance program that states and the federal government run together. It helps people who aren’t old enough for Medicare coverage, but may not have the resources for private insurance. It’s a lifeline for millions: For many people with low incomes, their children, and people with disabilities, Medicaid is their health coverage. Additionally, huge amounts of research have proved again and again that it literally saves lives.
So why cut it, especially during an economic downturn? Now more than ever, everyone needs health coverage, and clearly Medicaid works well. There isn’t a good reason to cut such a successful program, and it’s on us to make sure that states and the federal government remember that.
