Millennial Goes Into Debt Providing Care for Father

When her father had a stroke, Lucinda Koza had to become his sole caretaker at a young age.

With no long-term care insurance policy in place for Americans, Lucinda had to take on a large financial responsibility once her father could not continue working. Once he could no longer afford care, she went into debt paying for his care while also providing it. As his caretaker, she could no longer keep her job.

Essentially, what Lucinda does is provide hours of unpaid labor. This is something that millions of young Americans are going through today. It affects them at a crucial time in their lives, a time for building their careers and and pursuing their dreams.

As she explains, “Taking care of a parent and their health care and being financially responsible is enormous and potentially devastating without any kind of support in place from society at large.”
